Два физических лица и 17 компаний были вовлечены в покупку криптовалюты для сокрытия незаконно полученных средств. Преступная организация целенаправленно занималась созданием компаний для преступной деятельности. Криптовалютные биржи также сознательно сотрудничали с преступными организациями и не соблюдали надлежащие процедуры AML.
В 2016 году злоумышленники вывели с криптовалютной биржи Bitfinex $3,6 млрд в BTC. Как только средства стали мелкими партиями перемещаться из кошелька в традиционную банковскую систему, сотрудники ФБР смогли найти и арестовать мошенников. Проблема отмывания денег с помощью криптовалют очень быстро достигла международных масштабов. По инициативе Японии разработка мер была поручена FATF (Financial Action Task Force — группе разработки финансовых мер борьбы с отмыванием денег).
